How to Write a Recipe Card Anyone Can Follow
A good recipe card is short, in the right order, and leaves nothing to guess. These conventions are what cookbook editors use, scaled down to fit a 4x6 card.
What goes on the card
- Name. Be specific: "Lemon ricotta pancakes," not "Pancakes."
- From. Who it came from. Future readers will care.
- Serves / yield. "Serves 4" or "Makes 24 cookies" or "One 9 x 5 in loaf."
- Prep and cook time. Active time and oven or stove time, separately.
- Ingredients, then directions, then notes.
Ingredients: list them in the order you use them
- Quantity first, then unit, then the ingredient, then preparation: 2 cups flour, sifted; 1 onion, finely chopped.
- "1 cup chopped nuts" and "1 cup nuts, chopped" are different amounts. Write the one you mean.
- Group components with a short heading if needed: Crust: … Filling: …
- Write the size where it matters: 2 large eggs, 1 (15 oz) can beans.
Directions: one action per step
- Start with the oven temperature and pan prep, so nobody discovers it halfway through.
- Begin each step with a verb: Whisk… Fold… Bake…
- Give a doneness cue as well as a time: Bake 25-30 min, until a toothpick comes out clean.
- On small cards, combine trivial steps and cut words you don't need ("Next, you will want to…").
Standard abbreviations
| Write | Means | Write | Means |
|---|---|---|---|
| tsp | teaspoon | oz | ounce |
| Tbsp | tablespoon | lb | pound |
| c | cup | pkg | package |
| pt / qt | pint / quart | min / hr | minutes / hours |
Write "tsp" and "Tbsp" out in full rather than "t" and "T". The lowercase/uppercase difference is easy to miss in handwriting, and the two differ threefold.
Quick equivalents
1 Tbsp = 3 tsp · 1/4 cup = 4 Tbsp · 1 cup = 16 Tbsp = 8 fl oz · 1 stick butter = 1/2 cup · 350 °F ≈ 175-180 °C · 400 °F ≈ 200 °C. The pack includes a full printable measurement chart.
